Making a Difference with What We Have
Yeka means “stop" in isiXhosa. We believe in the power of stopping – stopping to help one another, and stopping the cycle of poverty that traps many families. We don't aim to be a massive organisation helping thousands; instead, we focus on creating a lasting impact on the lives of a select few.
Our
Beginnings
Yeka Foundation was born out of compassion during a challenging time. In the midst of the COVID-19 lockdown, Annie and Angela, a dedicated mother-daughter duo, witnessed the struggles of their community in the informal settlements. Many families were unable to work and faced the harsh reality of food insecurity.
Angela, with her strong connections within the local informal settlement, opened a bank account and reached out to friends, seeking donations to help a handful of families put food on the table. The response was overwhelming, a testament to the shared desire to help those in need. This outpouring of generosity ignited a spark in Angela and her network – a spark that grew into the Yeka Foundation.
But sometimes, life throws challenges – family situations, socioeconomic factors, and more – that can hinder someone's ability to reach their full potential. That's where we come in. We act as a bridge, connecting individuals with the resources and opportunities they might not have access to on their own. We don't reinvent the wheel; instead, we leverage existing programs and support structures. Here's how we empower people:
At Yeka Foundation, we believe everyone is created with immense potential.
